Our mainsails are generally in the 4 following types, but we can sew sails to your specifications should they vary from these types (for example for classic yachts, gaff sails, etc.).

STANDARD MAINSAILS :

These mainsails are the more traditional mainsail cut with short length battens and slab reefing. Our standard design is in crosscut and in Selected Premier Dacrons. Other cloths and cuts are available.
These sails are supplied by us including the battens and standard slides. The batten pockets are heavy duty, thickness top entry and with a Velcro lock.

AREA:
The standard mainsail area calculation is as follows :

P x E x 0.56 = Area

FULL BATTEN MAINSAILS :

Fully battened mainsails, with 4 - 7 full length battens (from leech to luff), have become increasingly popular in recent years.
It is recommended that they should be used together with a Lazy Jack system to enable better stowage on the boom. In addition, it is advisable for all but the smallest yachts, that Full Batten Mainsails should have a suitable luff slide or battencar system. These slides or batten cars are designed to take up the considerable pressure exerted by the full length battens on the luff of the sail at the level of each batten, and which can cause jamming and/or chafing if traditional slides are used. There are numerous special slides and battencars available on the market, and if you are planning to change to a full batten mainsail, then you should take this into account.

Our standard design is in crosscut and in Selected Premier Dacrons. Other cloths and cuts are available.

The sails are made with full length heavy duty batten pockets and the fittings at luff and leech depend on the type of car system used.

These sails are supplied by us excluding the battens and the batten slide or batten car system. We can advise you about where you can order battens or car systems if necessary.

If you already have a Full Batten mainsail and wish to re-use the existing batten fittings and/or battens, we can take this into account in the design of the new mainsail (see FULL BATTEN MAINSAIL MEASUREMENT SHEET for more details).

AREA:
The full batten mainsail area calculation is as follows :

P x E x 0.60* = Area

(* for mainsails with more pronounced roaches, e.g. for some catamaran designs, the formula may use a multiplication factor of 0.66 or 0.68)

PART FULL BATTEN MAINSAILS :

A more recent trend has been for mainsails to be designed with only the upper one or two battens being full length and the rest of the battens being shorter. We can also sew these mainsails.

Our standard design is in crosscut and in Selected Premier Dacrons. Other cloths and cuts are available.

The sails are made with full length heavy duty batten pockets and the fittings at luff and leech depend on the type of car system used.

AREA:
The full batten mainsail area calculation is as follows :

P x E x 0.60 = Area

IN-MAST ROLLER MAINSAILS :

In-mast roller furling mainsail systems have been extremely popular for their ease of handling (no need to flake the sail on the boom and reducing sail area and packing sail away can all be done from the cockpit), despite their reduced efficiency.

Our standard design is in crosscut and in Selected Premier Dacrons and with a stainless steel clew ring with leather finishing. Alternatively, a clew block can be fitted We would also recommend that the clew area, which remains exposed when the sail is furled away, should have an UV Suncover.

AREA:
The roller furling mainsail area calculation is as follows :

P x E x 0.50 = Area

BOOM ROLLER MAINSAILS :

For boom roller furling systems we recommend that the boom roller furling system manufacturer supplies us with the sailmaker's instructions for the sewing of these sails. The complications of boom angle, boom stacking and luff form, and luff guides are very specific to each system and the boom manufacturer must supply us with these specifications.

All offshore sails come with tell tales, flo stripes and large sailbags.
